Series created for XX / XY Zine .

My series explores the juxtaposition of the female role within the catholic church and how religious artifacts have repeatedly been featured in fashion designed for women. Observing the roles of both the immaculate & submissive saint and the beguiling & daring temptress, the images are contrasted with symbolicimagery and images of rural Austrian traditions. The landscape and pagan rituals clash with the religious subtext and challenge how the church has appropriated native tradition to establish its power within the local community.

The Slave Bible

Artifact
of the Day: Parts of the Holy Bible, Selected for the Use of the Negro
Slaves, in the British West-India Islands (also known as “Slave Bible”),
1808.

This volume is called “Holy,” but it is deeply
manipulative. Based on the King James Version, it omits all entries that
express themes of freedom. The story of Exodus, for example, describing
the Israelites’ escape from slavery in Egypt, is missing. The editors
left out entire books and large portions of others; their selections
stressed obedience, submission, and acceptance. The book was part of an
inhumane process to make slaves docile and subservient, to break their
spirits. #BlackHistoryMonth

I remember when I was in Bible school, I was always told how controversial it was whenever new versions of the Bible came out, because to omit or change anything was considered a very terrible sin.

Yet here we have a Bible with huge passages hacked out of it for the purpose of keeping enslaved people underfoot and in the dark. It’s a chilling example of how far people are willing to twist scripture to deliberately harm others they see as inferior.

I’m not usually one to interact with demons at all but I was in a bit of a bind and I called on Vassago for help. He came through in a stressful situation and I’m thankful as hell for it. I lost some important stuff and I was worried it had been pick-pocketed or lost outdoors. Both turned up almost immediately after in two places I had already searched. I’m willing to give him the credit for that.

I’m glad he didn’t seem to mind that I’d done some sloppy line work drawing his seal. I ain’t got the steadiest hand it the world. He had an interesting energy to him, a commanding presence. Seems no-nonsense but good-natured and reliable.
